On National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21st, 2023, Debwewin: The Oakville Truth Project partnered with the Town of Oakville, the Oakville Public Library and the Oakville Museum for the first annual Bannock Bake-Off Challenge, held at the Oakville Museum Coach House.
Members of the Oakville community were invited to form their own teams and submit their own twist on the classic Indigenous bread for a panel of judges. The judging panel was comprised of Tara Wong, CEO of the Oakville Public Library, Jeannie Falstead, Director of Indigenous Initiatives at Oakville Enterprises Corporation (OEC) and Marcel DaCosta, owner of Full Step Saga.
The idea for the Bake-Off came from Debwewin Advisory Council Member, Angela Bellegarde who wanted to do something unique locally to celebrate this important day in our community.
Congratulations to the winning teams:
1) Royal Eagles (RBC)
2) Hot Buns (Town of Oakville)
3) Wahescaknees (Project Autism)
Thank you to the other teams from the Town of Oakville, ADAPT, Oakville Community Foundation and Oakville Improv for your delicious entries.
A special thank you to Eddy Robinson, event lead, Angela Bellegrade, Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) Kitchen Staff, event bakers and the event organizers: Carolyn Cross, Marcus Logan, Tonia Di Risio and Gillian McLaren.
