WHEREAS, February 28th, 2022 marks the 202nd anniversary of the document signing of Treaty 22 & 23, referred to as the “Credit Treaties”. The Town of Oakville recognizes this day to honour the history, diversity and distinct contributions of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Oakville takes today to understand the breach of trust rooted in the acquirement of land noted within Treaty 22 in which the Town of Oakville resides and as a
result, the ongoing systematic injustices that tragically impact the Mississauga of the Credit First Nations as a result; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Oakville stands in solidarity with all Indigenous communities and is committed to the Truth and Reconciliation work that needs to continue, including the calls to action. Oakville recognizes the importance and sacred nature of cultural ceremonies and celebrations. While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how celebrations and events are acknowledged, the Town remains committed to commemorating integral dates such as the anniversary of Treaty 22 & 23 signings with an event, allowing us to recognize the history, listen to the experiences and amplify the voices of Indigenous Peoples.

THEREFORE, I, Rob Burton, Mayor of Oakville, do hereby proclaim February 28th, 2022 as the 202nd anniversary of the signings of Treaty 22 & 23 in the Town of Oakville.

Rob Burton, Mayor
Town of Oakville
